"Thread Count" measures how many threads are woven into each square inch of fabric. As thread count increases, the fabric should be softer and have a finer texture. Everyday use fabrics are usually 180 to 300 thread count; more luxurious fabrics are 400 to 750 thread count; whilst truly opulent fabrics will be 800 to 1200 thread count. The fabric weave also plays an important role: Sateen fabrics feel silkier and smoother, while percale fabrics will feel crisp, cool and especially breathable – like a freshly ironed cotton shirt.
